After months of speculation, it was announced during Friday's Nintendo Direct that Dragon Quest VII will be the next entry in the long-running JRPG series to get a facelift; it's coming to both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined will be released February 5, 2026, and preorders begin today on the Nintendo eShop.Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is a full-scale remake of the classic 2000 PlayStation title, looking very similar to Dragon Quest XI with updated visuals. The game follows the story of a young hero from the peaceful island of Estard, who--along with his friends Kiefer and Maribel--discovers ancient ruins that unlock the ability to travel to lost continents sealed away in the past. As players journey through time to these forgotten lands, they must resolve the tragedies that led to their destruction and restore them to the present, gradually rebuilding the world piece by piece. It was 10 years ago, during the 2015 Nintendo Direct, that Dragon Quest VII was announced to be coming outside Japan for Nintendo 3DS, with the new subtitle Fragments of the Forgotten Past.
